Beloved Ones in Christ,

Greetings of Love from South India.

We are well into monsoon rainy season here in Kerala State. The school session started the first week of June.  We have 73 students enrolled in the Bible College this year.  They represent eight states of India and the country of Nepal.  We thank the Lord for these young men and women.  They came with great enthusiasm to learn the Word of God in order to go back and have church planting ministries in their own villages and states.  Some of them have come from a strong Hindu background and have committed their lives to serve the Lord and be a witness for the cause of Christ.

This year the Lord has entrusted to us nearly 180 children in the two children’s homes (Mavelikara and Idukki), plus some who are supported in their homes. Some of the children have heartbreaking stories.  We thank the Lord for our prayerful supporters who have helped build facilities to provide accommodations, food and the necessities of life for these poor, abandoned, or orphaned children.  And we also pray that we shall be able to bring them to the saving knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

We have so much for which to praise the Lord.  He has answered the prayers of Christians in India and abroad for the election that took place recently and the change of government.  It is a real answer to prayer and a real miracle.  It appears that the door has been opened for further advancement of the Gospel for the next four years.  I believe the response of God’s people needs to be quick and effective.

We have received great blessing through Brother Paul Wallace from Sedona, Arizona who came to teach the Word of God at the Bible College for two weeks.  The students, as well as the church body were blessed by his ministry and deep spiritual insight.  The Lord inspired the heart of a young man, Brother Arlen Miller from Ohio, to come and study the Word of God at the Bible College. He is a real encouragement and blessing to the ministry here.  Please pray for him.

I am thankful that the Lord has given me the grace to come and oversee the ministry and for the ministering of the Word of God to the Bible College students as well as other Indian believers.  We needed to hire some new staff for both the Bible College and the Children’s Home.  The Lord has been faithful to help enlarge the ministry.  I’m grateful to our dear brothers and sisters in the Lord whose hearts the Lord has inspired to help support this ministry.

We had some wonderful experiences with a few people from Hindu background trusting the Lord.  Eleven persons were recently baptized, including five from the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu, who are in fellowship with a local body of believers.

As the ministry has been growing, the needs have also been increasing. We look to the Lord for His provision.  I would request that you seek the mind of the Lord and prayerfully support the ministry.  I pray the Lord will bless you as you partner with the work of our Lord in India.

Would you please . . .

  • Pray for safety during our stay in India.
  • Pray for the 180 children who God has entrusted to our care and support.
  • Pray for the new believers; those who have recently been baptized and those who have recently committed their lives to the Lord.
  • Pray for all the Bible College students; for their study and faithfulness to the ministry call on their lives.
  • Pray for the staff at the Bible College and Children’s Homes

The children, students, evangelists and believers at large in India are thanking the Lord for you and praying for you.  May His grace abound towards you.  Your sacrificial financial support and fervent prayer support is enabling us to reach many souls for the cause of Christ and is helping to train Indian nationals to reach the lost of this generation. May the Lord richly bless you and reward you for your partnership.

Yours in His Service,

G.V. Mathai

Dear Ones in Christ:

Since the independence of India in 1948, Mahatma Gandhi and his party (called the Congress Party) had ruled the country for over 45 years.  It is incredible how so many languages, ethnic groups, and political groups have co-existed over these many years.  Five years ago a Hindu party came into power, and freedom of religion was hindered in some areas of the country.  There has been religious persecution, and many Christians have been beaten and tortured.  Churches have been destroyed.  The fanatics wanted India to remain a strong Hindu nation.  Some states enacted laws against converting to Christianity.

Before the election last month, Christians inside and outside the country were praying.  God has heard their prayers, and a new government has been formed, under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi’s Congress Party and some communist party members.  We must wait and see how the country will fair under this new leadership.  We know that the prayers of the saints bring forth great results.

I plan to leave for India the first week of June.  The school year starts on June 2, and I will be overseeing the operation of the Bible College & Children’s Home.  The Lord has made it possible for Paul Wallace and Arlen Miller to accompany me on this trip.  Please pray for our safety in traveling, protection from the enemy, guidance, and fruitfulness of the ministry.  I will be returning to the states the last week of July.

Prayer Requests:

  • New government to restore peace and order and freedom of religion to the country.
  • Smooth operation of the Bible College & Children’s Home.
  • Wisdom in the hiring of new staff members.
  • All the evangelists & their families who are working to spread the Gospel.
  • New converts to grow in the knowledge of the Lord.
  • Two new believers’ groups in Kerala state & new church building under construction in Manipur.
  • New Van needed for our Children’s Home ministry.

Overall, please pray that the Lord will be glorified in all the ministries of India Evangelical Mission.  Your continuous prayers and financial support are helping us to win souls and alleviate the suffering of many.  I count upon your prayers for me and my family and the ministry of IEM.

With much love,

G.V. Mathai

Beloved Ones:

Warm greetings in the precious name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

As I write this letter, terrorist activities are taking place all around the world. One never knows when or where he may be attacked. Recently bombs exploded in the busy streets of Bombay. Close to 45 people were killed, and hundreds were injured. It was also reported that bombs were found at railway stations in New Delhi. Authorities believe fanatic religious groups are responsible. Inside the northern border of India, in Kashmir, people are killed every day. These killings and violent acts are being perpetrated by religious extremists. Even though they claim to be “religious,” they kill and torture those of other faiths.

Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy; I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). While the world is sinking in fear and tyranny, with no hope, mourning and wailing is heard in every corner of the world. But even though the world is in such grief, we know there is a Blessed Redeemer. Before He comes to establish His kingdom, we have been asked to take the Good News of the Gospel to every part of the world and let them know that Jesus saves. The Gospel is the power for salvation. We have been given the power, the potential, and the tools. We must not keep silent at this hour; we must take the message of the Gospel to the millions who are dying without hope.

Out of the 1.2 billion people living in India, only about 3% are Christians, and many are Christian in name only. Thousands of villages are yet to be reached with the message of the Gospel. We thank God for raising up Indian nationals to accomplish this task. They make a real sacrifice—risking rejection and physical torture—yet they continue preaching the Gospel. Souls are being saved, churches are being planted, and the work of the Lord is flourishing more than any other time in the history of India, in spite of all the oppression and persecution.

The enemy is always at work, within and without, trying to disturb the work. Please pray for the smooth operation of the Bible College & Children’s Home. Also remember to pray for the servants of the Lord working in various ministry centers throughout India.

We thank the friends of IEM for your commitment to reach the lost and to alleviate the suffering of the poor and oppressed. Your devotion for the Lord is evidenced by your compassion for His work. Please continue upholding the entire ministry in your prayerful support. May the Lord fill your hearts with His joy and meet all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Yours in His Service,

G.V. Mathai
